When these warriors use too much Yoki, they “awaken,” becoming a super-Yoma called an Awakened Being, well only the strong worriers the weaker ones just normal yomas. The act of awakening is likened to the feeling of sexual climax, so while both male and female warriors existed in the past only the women proved to be successful warriors and so the creation of male Claymores stopped altogether. Yoma and Claymore warriors alike are powered by a demonic energy, Yoki, which allows shape-shifting and gain extreme strength. The public refer to them as “Claymores,” alluding to their Claymoreswords, or “Silver-eyed Witches,” due to their silver eyes. These female warriors wear armored uniforms. A mysterious group, known as The Organization, creates human-Yoma hybrids to kill Yoma for a fee.

The group chances on a besieged Frankish fortress and makes a deal with the attacking army to work with them in exchange for half the fort’s plunder. The story is mainly starts off with introduction of a small Viking group under the lead of a cunning commander named Askeladd and containing a gifted young fighter named Thorfinn. The story mainly revolves around the age of Flateyjarbók, The Saga of the Greenlanders and The Saga of Eric the Red. As King Sweyn nears death, his sons, Prince Harald and Prince Canute, are having a classic fight for the throne. Vinland Saga is set in England starting in 1013 AD, the year in which the Danish King Sweyn Forkbeard conquered most of it.
